Suvereto

Description

Suvereto is a small town in the province of Livorno, set in Val Cornia. The place name probably derives from the cork trees, which abound in the surrounding forests.
It is mentioned for the first time in a document of 973, but the origins of the village occurred during the early Middle Age, under the Aldobrandeschis’ domination.
During the XIII-XIV century Suvereto’s development continues with the construction of the walls, the town hall and other architecturally impressive structures. At that time the Republic of Pisa started a policy of territorial expansion that leaded to conquer the whole area and to annex numerous villages like Suvereto to its domains. After a short period of Pisan domination, the Republic of Florence settle down the territory after previously defeating Pisa and conquering its territories.
The Rocca Aldobrandesca (Aldobrandeschis’ Fortress) is located in the highest point of the village and it is already mentioned in 973; actually it consists of three parts: the ruins of the ancient tower (built around 1164), four stories with intermediate floors and the remains of the surrounding walls.
the Church of San Giusto, cited in a document of 923, was subsequently rebuilt in 1189 by Barone Amico and Bono di Calci. It is characterised by a Romanesque style portal surmounted by a lunette and a lintel decorated with floral motifs.
We also mention the Church of Santissima Annunziata (XII century), the convent of San Francesco (1288), the Church of Santissimo Crocifisso (XVI century), the Church of Madonna di Sopra la Porta (XVIII century) and the XIII century Palazzo Comunale.
