Palazzuolo sul Senio

Description

Palazzuolo sul Senio is a charming village of the Mugello area, in the heart of the Tusca Romagna. Its name derives from the diminutive of the Latin word "Palatium" with the meaning of "palace, building", to which the specification "sul Senio" (along the Senio torrent) was added, with reference to its position along the homonymous torrent. The village developed in the Middle age, under the jurisdiction of the Pagani family. Subsequently it passed under the control of the Ubaldinis and, finally, of Florence.
Among the most important artistic and historiica monuments, we have to mention the XVII century Church of Sant'Antonio, with a beautiful three arch portico, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Neve, which preserves a valued image of the Madonna in the style of Botticelli, a wooden choir and some Baroque style altars, the Church of Santo Stefano, refurbished during the XX century, and the Parish Church of Misileo, of medieval origins, with a Romanesque style belltower and crypt.
We also suggest to visit the Museum of the mountain folk and the Archaeological Museum of the Upper Mugello area, both at Palazzo dei Capitani.
