Cordignano

Description

It is a municipality in the province of Treviso, located on the border with Friuli Venezia Giulia, a region characterized by very heterogeneous territories and includes several plain and mountain areas, that reach more than a thousand meters of altitude above sea level. The centre, washed by the river Meschio, is embellished with elegant XVIII century villas and churches of great artistic value. The local economy is based on farming, thanks to the large presence of water sources, that also helped flourish several craftsman and industrial realities. The town is also famous for the production of olive oils and fine wines.
Traces, found in the area, evidence the presence of settlements since prehistoric times: the first larger concentration of buildings dates back to between 5000 and 3000 B.C. With the Roman colonization, the entire area experienced a period of great development, especially in agriculture. Documented traces of the existence of a centre date back to 710 A.D., a time when the territory was ruled by the Lombards. It later became possession assigned to various feudal families, including from the Da Camino, the Rangoni and the Mocenigo.
In the later centuries, Cordignano shared the same historical events of the other localities of the territory of Treviso.
