Baveno

Description

A municipality in the province of Verbania, situated on the shores of Lake Maggiore, Baveno is a popular and elegant resort, valued for its mineral waters and its pink granite quarries, located not far from Stresa and Verbania. Of ancient origins, the objects found here evidence with certainty that the area was frequented by the Romans. The necropolis of Villa Galtrucco with graves dating to the early Empire Ages and the fifteen burials with urns, furniture and ornaments, which came to light during the second half of the XIX century, have permitted to reconstruct an important piece of history. A Roman plaque is one of the historical features of the façade of the Parish of San Gervasio and Protasio.

Not to miss:

- the Church of SS. Gervasio and Protasio built in the XI century in Romanesque style and restored in the XVIII century, is centrally located in the main square that has XVI century origins. The façade features a portal surmounted by an arch and inside preserves two paintings by Ferrari and a wooden crucifix of the XV century.
- the octagonal Baptistery, located next to the church, presents XVII and XVIII century decorations and is preceded by a portico with four arches in Baroque style and is dominated by a dome decorated with frescoes by local artists of the XV-XVI centuries.
- Villa Henfrey-Branca, dating to the XIX century, is situated on the lakefront.
- Villa Fedora was named after a famous opera composed by the composer Umberto Giordano, who was the owner of the building. Erected during the middle of last century, it features a central three-story building in Doric style.
